What must I DO to be saved?

Matthew 19:20-22 “The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” Amen, this young Jewish ruler thought that he had kept all the commandments of God and assumed that he had gained eternal life through His own merit, but Jesus quickly showed him where his heart truly lied. The young man would’ve rather held on to his luxurious possessions than sell all and give it to the poor. We then notice something else. When Jesus mentioned the commandments, He never mentioned the 1st 4 about loving God. It was because this young man already loved his earthly reign and had no understanding of the heavenly reign which was to come in Jesus Christ. Jesus came, not to change the law, but to fulfill it. The commandments for us today simply condemn us by revealing our sin. For example to “not bear far witness” (lying), we have all lied before. Or to “not make and graven image or idols”, that is to say that we idolize something more than God, whether it be money or yourself. It is only through Jesus Christ that we are saved, not the commandments.Today, I pray that we stop looking at ourselves, whether it be for salvation or with walking righteously, and focus on the love and grace of Jesus Christ today. God be with you.
