Is our salvation secured in Jesus Christ?

Is our salvation in Jesus Christ secure? 1 Peter 1:3-5 speaks of our being born-again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. To expound on that, the faith that we have is not in an idol or a graven image but in a living almighty God who overcame death itself. A question to ask then is if Jesus Christ died on the cross nailing all of our punishment to, and rose from the dead on the 3rd day so that we can have access to our heavenly inheritance with the LORD for all eternity, then HOW could we ever lose our salvation!?

Many Christian denominations take scripture out of context, using it liberally to mean what they believe it to mean. However, that practice is extremely dangerous and has caused many cultic sects to arise (Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, etc.). In reference to our salvation through Jesus Christ, the idea that our salvation can be lost because of our sin after coming to “know” Jesus Christ is not correct. The Word of God says that if we are truly born-again, we are new creations. The old nature (sin) has past away and the new nature (righteousness) has come (2 Cor. 5:17). Therefore, though we still live in this world, we are not of it. So, will our flesh be tempted? Yes. Will we fall to its tempting? Yes. However, this is not to say that we will lose our salvation. Paul writes in Romans 6:1-2, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?” So there is our understanding! we may fall but it is not as if we, as born-again believers, desire to stay in our sin! If an individual does desire to stay in their sin, then the mystery of their salvation may have then become exposed to really be no salvation at all. Thats where the confusion is. Jesus Christ said that “”Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 7:21). So, though some may proclaim to be saved, only the LORD knows who He elected to respond to the Gospel. For us to know, Matt. 7:16 says that “you will know them by their fruits.” Real saving faith is revealed through how we live, it is not the catalyst to which we rely on our salvation. Jesus Christ is our salvation alone, not by our own efforts, lest any of us should boast (Eph. 2:8-9).

Lastly, 1 Peter 1:5 confirms, “who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” It is God through Jesus Christ, who guards our salvation. So if you truly struggle with knowing whether you are truly born again, know that the grace of God has covered all of your sins through the work of the cross completed by Jesus Christ. Not only did He die for your sins, but He rose from the dead to secure that Jesus was God and that His covenant of grace to us was secured over death which would lead to everlasting life with the LORD forever and ever. God bless you.
